Who is the Banana Man?

A while ago Bert met Kevin Allen. A man who is known as Kevin to most people - but in Zululand, South Africa he is known as the Banana Man by thousands of children.

Why?

In February 2005 he saw the terrible plight of AIDS orphans in South Africa on a TV documentary. He watched in horror as a young boy witnessed his father die of AIDS in front of his eyes. He had to walk miles back to his home, a filthy mud hut with no running water, gas or electricity. Distraught and starving, he soon broke down in tears - so did Kevin in front of his TV. The mother of the boy had already died of AIDS a year earlier and his brave sister, aged only 13, tried to comfort him in vain. Kevin learned throughout the documentary that this kind of scenes of despair and inhumanity were being played out a thousand times a day across Africa.

The AIDS pandemic had orphaned over 1.7 million children in South Africa alone and he simply could not accept that no one would help these poor children. Six days later he was standing in rural Nkandla, Zululand, feeding the children he had watched suffering on TV just days earlier.

He went to help the one boy he saw in the documentary but found thousands more children who needed help. .

He returned home with the maddening knowledge that thousands of children were orphaned, starving, frightened and alone and he vowed he would do all he could to help these forgotten people.

We decided we would help Kevin with his mission!

Now all you have to do is decide to help us to help him to help the forgotten children of Zululand!!
